Good Evening Parents and Cadets,
I've had a few requests for more information about the Survival Exercise! I'm glad these questions have come up as it helps me to better inform you of our activities!
The survival exercise will be taking place a Camp Morton Provincial Park, which is about 10 km North of Gimli on Highway 9 (PTH 222). The Natural Resource Office is located about 2 north. A link to a map is located below. There will be 6 - 8 staff members in attendance on the exercise, they will facilitate all training and supervision of the cadets. All staff members have been trained, by the Canadian Forces, specifically on conducting these types of exercises with Cadets. They are all certified in First Aid. Cellular phone service is available in the area and if required cadets can call home if necessary. Parents can reach the Officer In-Charge Lt Comer on the squadron cell @ 981-0219 anytime during the exercise. If a situation arises where a cadet wants to go home (ie homesick), they can call and arrange to have a parent pick them up at anytime.
The cadets will take part in classes and activities all weekend on topics such as;
- PACK PERSONAL EQUIPMENT FOR A FIELD EXERCISE
- MAINTAIN PERSONAL EQUIPMENT AND HYGIENE IN THE FIELD
- OBSERVE SITE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
- DISCUSS SURVIVAL PSYCHOLOGY
- IDENTIFY TYPES OF SHELTERS
- CONSTRUCT A HOOTCHIE-STYLE SHELTER
- LIGHT, MAINTAIN AND EXTINGUISH A FIRE
- IDENTIFY ENVIRONMENTAL INJURIES
- TIE KNOTS AND LASHINGS
- RESPECT THE ENVIRONMENT IN THE FIELD
- IDENTIFY REGIONAL WILDLIFE
- COLLECT DRINKING WATER IN THE FIELD
The Department of National Defense began publishing a magazine about Cadet training in Canada. It can be read online at http://www.xperience.gc.ca/ there is an article about a "Field Training Exercise" in the August edition. It also explains a lot about the other training opportunities that are available in the cadet program!
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please call us (981-0219) or email us (email@example.com)!
We look forward to an excellent field training exercise this weekend!!
